Ms. Baker became a Certified Shorthand Reporter in 1974 and worked as a freelance court reporter for several years. During this time, Ms. Baker began teaching court reporting at the college level in Houston, Texas for approximately 12 years. At this point in time, the need for a proprietary school for court reporting in Houston was very evident, which prompted the beginning of Shirley Baker Career Institute. The school began with approximately 15 students and rapidly grew to a student body population of over 400 students on a consistent basis. Over the years, Shirley Baker graduated a multitude of highly successful and professional court reporters, who, today, are reaping the benefits of the quality education received from Shirley Baker. Ms. Baker has also served on evaluation teams for national accrediting agencies to evaluate court reporting schools for accreditation.
